Day 9 - Monday 9/15/14 – At Sea and Ancient Olympus, Greece

It was another beautiful day.  The alarm went off at 8, and Bill brought me coffee soon after.  We went outside to watch them set the sails for the morning while we tooled around in front of Katakolon, Greece.

The special at breakfast was fresh waffles which made Bill happy.  I just had the standard for me of scrambled eggs, bacon, and lots of fresh fruit and coffee.

I have been chatting with Sophia who is our Greek tour guide and who will guide us in Athens.  Neat lady.  At noon, the sails were brought down, and we headed in to dock at Katakolon.  At the dock already was the mega ship MSC Preziosa, a 4000 plus passenger ship with many decks and a huge water slide on top.  We all watched them, and they watched us which was fun.

For lunch we had another buffet on the Lido Deck:  turkey breast with honey mustard, glass noodle salad, broccoli with walnuts, tomatoes with spring onions, onion soup, marinated red snapper, roast pork leg, leeks, oricchiett with cheese (yummy), coconut milk/rice pudding with papaya ragout.

At 1:45 we boarded our 2 buses to drive 40 minutes to Olympia.  Sophia led us well, bought the tickets, and we started on our tour.  We practically had the site to ourselves.  Since I had done so much research, I sort of went off on my own to figure out the different buildings and temples.  It truly is a "big pile of old rocks" scattered everywhere, but with my map and descriptions, I managed to see everything I wanted to see.

The sun was hot, but there were lots of big trees scattered around with a breeze and plenty of old rock seating!  We finished the tour at 3:15 and walked to the Olympus Museum, a fairly new and quite well done museum not too far from where our walk ended.

The museum contained a nice array of items displayed quite well.  I enjoyed the vases and some of the more unique items.  My favorite was a huge statue of Hermes holding his toddler brother Dyonesis.

We started for the ship at 4:20 and got back about 5.  There is a sulphur smell around the dock that comes from beneath the sea in spots.

I came to the cabin and took a much needed and relaxing shower.  Then it was time to go to the Lido Deck for the Greek Buffet dinner.  I didn't think it was vary 'Greek".  We had cold meats, cheese, olives, guacamole with chips, bell pepper and pear salad which even though a strange combination was rather tasty, cucumber with sesame, wild rice salad with mint, crispy pork leg, butter mackerel, mixed vegetables.  For dessert was the wonderful pistachio ice cream and a fried chocolate ball with a lava center.

I went to the lounge to start the email in quiet while everyone else watched an old 40 minute movie called "Around Cape Horn".  At 9:15 I went back to the Lido Deck to hear the crew sing as a "Sea Cloud Shanty Gang" sing sea songs.
